What is modern masculinity?

i have had alot of cause to consider this word over my life. i grew up in a culture that is gender neutral. we do not have specified gender roles. we value service in all forms. however my experiences in life after being in india makes me wonder what exactly is modern masculinity and what is its utility to the world?

in western society men have assumed the defacto role of being in charge. you hear it everywhere “be a man”, “man up”, “have some balls”. what does that mean?

let us separate the two variants of how we define the term “male”. biological and social. biologically the male of the species helps fertilize an egg carried by the female. after copulation his job is done. there r many examples in the animal kingdom where the female kills the male following copulation, as she knows it offers no utility in that species following the event.

now let us consider socially, what does the male do? the male is usually larger, more muscular, and less impulse control. it typically is the protector role. however in social species we see male and females contributing to the collective of the species.

with one exception- modern men.

my experiences echo the same sentiments of women in my generation, we have never been helped by a man. especially in any work environment. men consider themselves the breadwinner- their “job” was to bring home the bacon because women were not allowed to work.
